Edward Bawden CBE RA

Edward Bawden CBE RA (1903-89) was an English painter, graphic artist and illustrator, known for his prints, book covers, posters and garden metalwork furniture.

He served as a War artist in WWII and he is often associated with Eric Ravillious.

He attended the Cambridge Municipal Art School and gained a scholarship to the Royal College of Art.

He married the artist and potter Charlotte Bawden and together were principal members of the influential Great Bardfield Artists (figurative work) during the mid 20th Century.

He became an associate member of the Royal Academy in 1947 after receiving his CBE in 1946, before becoming an elected member of the RA in 1956.

He has given much to the teaching world and roughly 3000 bodies of work were donated upon his death in 1989 to The Higgins Art Gallery & Museum in Bedford.

His works are in demand and the popularity of all the Great Bardfield artists are continually rising recently.
